Methodology: how Compar'Car ranks vehicles

Compar'Car ranks new and used vehicles, of any powertrain, according to your profile. This page explains how the ranking is calculated, where the data comes from, and what the ranking does not do.

The principle: a 0 to 100 score based on your profile

You enter your profile (budget, financing, journeys, mileage, charging, use, children, vehicle type, preferred brands, new or used). For each vehicle in your selection, Compar'Car calculates a score from 0 to 100: the higher it is, the better the vehicle matches your profile.

The calculation is the same for every vehicle, new or used, electric, hybrid or petrol/diesel: only your profile and each vehicle's characteristics count.

The criteria and their importance

The score combines the criteria below. Importance shows their relative weight in the calculation.

When a vehicle falls outside your request

  • Some requests are treated as constraints: budget, vehicle type, new or used, number of seats and boot space. A vehicle that does not meet them is not excluded, but its score is reduced and a warning is shown (for example “above your budget”).
  • An electric car offered to a profile with no home charging is also penalised.

Where the data comes from

  • New prices: the public price list, entry trim, recorded on the date shown on each page. A price marked “to be confirmed” comes from a similar version or an estimate.
  • Spec sheets (power, boot, seats, consumption, range): entered generation by generation.
  • Used prices and mileage: estimated by Compar'Car. We start from the new price, remove price inflation, then apply a depreciation curve by age, powertrain and body type. They are orders of magnitude, not market valuations.
  • Monthly payments: indicative, calculated over 60 months at 5.9%, with a 10% down payment for new cars.

Independence and business model

  • The ranking is calculated only from your profile and the vehicles' characteristics: no manufacturer, dealer or partner can influence it or pay for it.
  • Compar'Car is free for you. It is funded only when you agree to be put in touch with professionals in your area (test-drive request or contact consent).

What the ranking does not do

  • It does not replace a test drive, a quote or a professional's advice.
  • It gives neither market valuations nor financial or insurance advice.
  • It does not know the exact condition of a particular used car, nor current promotions.
