Low-emission zones 2026: which cars are affected in your city

Low-emission zones (ZFE-m) restrict circulation for the most polluting vehicles based on their Crit'Air sticker, within a perimeter and set hours defined by each metro area. Since January 1st, 2025, several major French cities already ban vehicles rated Crit'Air 4, 5, and unclassified — and some have gone further by also excluding Crit'Air 3.

Which vehicles are affected

In practice, this mainly affects diesel vehicles first registered before 2011 and petrol vehicles first registered before 2006 (Crit'Air 4 and 5), as well as, in the most advanced cities, diesels registered between 2006 and 2011 (Crit'Air 3). A recent electric or hybrid vehicle is not, as of today, affected by any of these restrictions.

A calendar that genuinely varies from one city to another

Paris, Lyon, Grenoble, and several other cities have already rolled out Crit'Air 3 restrictions, with calendar adjustments on actual enforcement varying by city. Other urban areas currently remain at the Crit'Air 4/5 threshold. That's why the right question is never "do low-emission zones affect my vehicle" in general, but "what does my specific city's regulation say, as of today" — the calendar keeps evolving every year.

The official Crit'Air website (certificat-air.gouv.fr) and each city's own website publish the exact perimeter, hours, and affected vehicles — the only source worth treating as reliable, since general summaries move more slowly than the regulation itself.
