Used electric cars in 2026: good deal or bad idea?
Electric vehicles reached as much as 35 to 38% of new car sales in 2026 — the first generations of these vehicles are now naturally feeding the used market, often at steeper discounts than an equivalent petrol car. That makes used electric genuinely affordable, provided you know what replaces the "service book" as a trust indicator on this type of vehicle.
Battery health, not mileage, is the real indicator
On a petrol car, mileage is a fairly good proxy for overall wear. On an electric car, what matters is the battery's State of Health (SoH): two vehicles with the same mileage can have very different battery capacity depending on climate, number of fast charges, and calendar age. Most manufacturers can provide this diagnostic via a dealership appointment or a dedicated OBD reader — always ask for it before buying.
The battery warranty is often the real safety net
Most manufacturers guarantee the battery for 8 years or 160,000km (whichever comes first), with a minimum guaranteed capacity threshold (typically 70%). Checking that this warranty is still active — and, crucially, transferable to the new owner, which isn't automatic across all brands — should be part of the pre-purchase check, just like the inspection report on a petrol car.
Real-world range, not the original WLTP figure
The range shown when new (WLTP standard) decreases with battery age, but also with weather and driving style. A test with a full charge, followed by a simple calculation (kilometers driven ÷ percentage of battery used × 100), gives a far more reliable estimate than the original spec sheet for judging whether real-world range fits your usage.
Check your own charging setup before signing
The best used electric vehicle at the best price is still a bad purchase if charging at home or along your daily route isn't straightforward. That's a question to ask before comparing prices, not after.
